IDF Reveals Secret Visit by Coalition Leaders to West Bank Outpost Before Kosra Clashes
Days before violent clashes erupted in the West Bank village of Kosra, the Israeli military disclosed that a minister and two coalition Knesset members secretly visited the unauthorized outpost "Tel Talpiot." According to the IDF, this visit occurred shortly before right-wing activists from the outpost stormed Kosra, effectively encouraging their actions. The military described the situation as biblical-level anarchy.
The IDF also addressed the contentious issue of transferring security responsibilities in the West Bank to the Israeli police. Senior officers expressed skepticism about such a handover, emphasizing that police are tasked with routine law enforcement rather than combat operations against hostile forces, which remain the army's domain. They raised concerns about police access to intelligence and operational challenges, citing a recent deadly incident in the village of Tal where two IDF officers were killed.
Further complications include the legal basis for enforcement in Areas B and C of the West Bank, where Israeli police operate under Israeli law, not Jordanian law. The military criticized the police as politically compromised and ineffective, especially regarding crime in Arab sectors and overall lawlessness. The National Security Minister has repeatedly called for Shin Bet assistance to bolster police capabilities.
The IDF also highlighted a conflict of interest, noting that the current police minister is ideologically aligned with extremist right-wing activists, some implicated in violent acts. An internal IDF task force is currently reviewing the division of security responsibilities in the West Bank, with findings to be presented to political leadership. However, military officials bluntly stated that transferring authority to the police "will not happen in reality."
