NBA Embraces Physical Play Style Suited to Israeli Star Deni Avdija

Deni Avdija, the Israeli forward for the Portland Trail Blazers, is emerging as a true star in the NBA as the league shifts toward a more physical style of play. Ahead of the 2026/2027 season starting in about two months, sports journalist Mike Ritzman discussed Avdija's role on the team in the Locked On Blazers podcast. Ritzman noted that while Avdija may score fewer 30-point games due to a more balanced shot distribution with teammates Ja Morant and Damian Lillard, he will still be an effective scorer and contributor.

Ritzman emphasized that the NBA has entered a new era where physicality is more prominent, with players encouraged to be more aggressive on offense. He said Avdija excels in this environment, as he is comfortable using his physicality to gain an advantage, making him well-suited to the league's evolving style. Portland will open the upcoming season at home against the Phoenix Suns. Avdija is also set to face fellow Israelis Ben Sharf and Danny Wolf in Brooklyn between December 21 and 22, with a home game against them scheduled for December 29 to 30. Additionally, Avdija will play against the reigning champions in New York on November 21.
