Israel Excludes Nursing Home Residents From Voting, Sparking Criticism
Israel's decision to exclude residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities from having dedicated polling stations in the upcoming Knesset elections has drawn sharp criticism. The move, justified by election authorities as avoiding "inequality" between those living in such facilities and other elderly citizens, effectively denies about 37,000 elderly residents the practical ability to vote. Dr. Nachman Shai, a former Knesset member and advocate for senior citizens, condemned the decision as emblematic of the state's indifferent attitude toward its aging population.
The Supreme Court and the Central Election Committee are currently reviewing petitions demanding the establishment of polling stations within nursing homes. Justice Amith noted that the state is capable of providing exceptions, citing special polling stations for diplomats and Israeli seafarers abroad. However, while seafarers receive this accommodation, elderly citizens in care facilities do not, despite their long-standing contributions to the country.
Dr. Shai highlighted the irony that seafarers, many of whom may not even be Israeli nationals, are granted voting access on ships and in ports, while Israeli seniors who built the nation are left behind. He also pointed to the growing elderly population in Israel, with life expectancy rising to 85 for women and 82.5 for men, emphasizing their ongoing social and economic contributions.
