Israeli Doctors Save Premature Baby With Innovative Heart Catheter Procedure
A premature infant born with a complex heart defect was saved last week at Sheba Medical Center in Israel through a pioneering catheterization procedure. The baby, weighing just 1.78 kilograms, developed severe pulmonary congestion due to excessive blood flow to the lungs, rapidly deteriorating and requiring full respiratory support. Given the infant's fragile condition, doctors feared open-heart surgery would be too traumatic and risky.
Instead, a multidisciplinary medical team performed a delicate, minimally invasive catheterization. Dr. Sharon Borik Higer, head of pediatric cardiac catheterization at Sheba, manually modified a device typically used to completely block blood vessels by creating a tiny hole in it. This allowed the team to carefully reduce and control blood flow to the lungs without fully obstructing it, stabilizing the baby's condition.
The procedure's results were immediate: within a week, the infant was weaned off ventilation and cardiac medications, began gaining weight, and showed normal development. The baby was discharged with enhanced home cardiac monitoring and will undergo definitive surgical repair later.
The infant's father described the ordeal as "the most cruel and frightening 48 hours" of their lives, emphasizing the catheterization and medical team's ingenuity as lifesaving. Dr. Tal Tirosh Wagner, deputy director of Sheba's Safra Children's Heart Institute, noted that home monitoring supports safer recovery and reduces hospitalization risks.
This case marks the first time such a manual engineering adaptation was used in Israel to save a premature baby's life, offering hope to other families facing similar challenges.
