Defense Minister Katz Vows No Israeli Withdrawal From Lebanon Security Zone Despite Trump Warning

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz reaffirmed that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will not withdraw from the security zone in southern Lebanon until Hezbollah is fully disarmed. Katz made these remarks on August 13, 2026, following a visit to the area where he inspected the Bofor fortress, recently retaken by the Golani Brigade after 44 years, and observed destroyed Hezbollah and Iranian terror tunnels that had threatened Israeli communities in the Galilee. He emphasized that the IDF currently controls 700 square kilometers of the security zone, which is devoid of civilians and where terror infrastructure has been demolished.

Katz stressed that the IDF is focused on decisive victory and threat removal, aligning with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security approach. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a long-term presence in the area to protect Israeli forces and northern communities until Hezbollah's threat is eliminated. Katz also referenced the lessons learned from the October 7 attacks, underscoring the need for a firm security stance.

In contrast, the U.S. State Department, responding to journalists' inquiries without naming Katz directly, reiterated that a permanent Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon contradicts the terms of existing agreements and is inconsistent with long-term peace and security between Israel and Lebanon. This statement reflects criticism from the Trump administration regarding Israel's ongoing presence in the security zone.

Katz declared that both he and Prime Minister Netanyahu have communicated directly with U.S. leadership to affirm Israel's position. He concluded by affirming Israel's commitment to securing its northern border and communities against threats from Hezbollah and other jihadist elements in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.
