IDF Northern Gaza Brigade Commander Warns Against Israeli Withdrawal from Yellow Line Ahead of Historic Hamas Deal

Days before the Peace Council announced a historic agreement with Hamas, the commander of the IDF's Northern Brigade in Gaza, Colonel Omri Mashiach, held a closed-door conversation with members of Kibbutz Mefalsim near the Gaza border. In the discussion, Mashiach emphasized the critical importance of the "Yellow Line," which marks the current Israeli security boundary inside Gaza, describing it as both a yellow and red line. He warned that if Israeli forces do not actively pursue Hamas militants, the militants will pursue them instead.

Mashiach detailed the extensive military operations conducted by the IDF in Gaza, explaining that they are systematically clearing and destroying hundreds of thousands of Hamas military infrastructures established since Israel's disengagement. He highlighted the significant presence of IDF forces along the Yellow Line, including tanks, engineering units, and infantry, which maintain a robust defense and offensive posture to prevent Hamas attacks on nearby Israeli communities.

According to the Peace Council's plan, Israel is expected to gradually withdraw from the Yellow Line, reducing its security zone in exchange for Hamas disarming. This would involve the IDF retreating and an international stabilization force entering the area, while Hamas remains armed beyond the fence. Mashiach expressed concern that this rollback could undermine the hard-won security gains, stressing the moral and operational necessity of maintaining Israeli presence deep inside Gaza to protect Israeli civilians.

He also revealed that the IDF has already had to significantly restrict its rules of engagement, moving from full operational freedom to firing only to neutralize immediate threats. Mashiach underscored the brigade's defensive doctrine of "kill or be killed," reflecting the high stakes of the conflict. Having lost nine soldiers, including his personal driver, in recent battles, he conveyed the gravity of relinquishing the current security line, warning that without it, the threat level could revert to the dangerous situation seen on October 6, 2023.

The commander’s candid remarks, shared just before the public announcement of the ceasefire agreement, highlight the tension between political decisions and military realities on the ground in Gaza.
