Jared Kushner’s $1.4 Billion Albanian Resort Deal Faces Legal and Corruption Scandal

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s ambitious $1.4 billion luxury resort project on Albania’s Zvërnec Peninsula is embroiled in controversy amid allegations of money laundering and land theft. The development group, backed by Kushner, purchased over $120 million worth of coastal land from Artur Shahu, a former Albanian gangster and international drug trafficking suspect. Court documents reveal Shahu is accused of stealing land from local villagers through forged Ottoman-era documents and laundering drug profits by acquiring real estate in Albania.

Shahu, who fled Albania in 1999 after a violent incident, is now subject to an international arrest warrant issued by Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Structure (SPAK) in cooperation with European law enforcement. Authorities have frozen the $120 million transaction funds pending ongoing criminal investigations. Local villagers have long contested Shahu’s ownership claims, fighting legal battles for nearly two decades and warning Kushner’s developers about the disputed land rights. Despite this, the developers proceeded, erecting fences that sparked violent clashes with residents.

The scandal has intensified public outrage, fueling the "Flamingo Revolution," a mass protest movement initially sparked by environmental concerns over the protected coastal area but now encompassing broader anti-corruption demonstrations against Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government. Tens of thousands have protested in Tirana, carrying signs opposing Kushner’s project and government corruption. Kushner and his partners are not accused of criminal wrongdoing, and their representatives maintain the land purchase was legal and should be resolved through Albanian courts. However, with the transaction funds frozen and investigations ongoing, the future of the resort project remains uncertain.
