Israel Eliminates Hamas Military Chief Muhammad Deif After Decades-Long Pursuit
Muhammad Deif, born Muhammad Diab Ibrahim al-Masri on August 12, 1965, in the Khan Younis refugee camp in Gaza, was a highly elusive and sought-after commander of Hamas's military wing for over two decades. Known by the nickname "Deif," meaning "guest" in Arabic, due to his secretive lifestyle and frequent changes of residence, he was also called "Abu Khaled." Deif grew up in Khan Younis and was childhood acquaintances with Yahya Sinwar, another senior Hamas leader. He joined the Muslim Brotherhood in his youth and later became active in student politics at the Islamic University of Gaza, eventually joining Hamas's military wing during the First Intifada.
Deif was imprisoned by Israel in 1989 for about 16 months but was released under undisclosed circumstances. He rose through Hamas's ranks, becoming a key figure in the organization’s terror infrastructure in the 1990s, and was a protégé of Yahya Ayyash, known as "The Engineer." Deif was linked to several deadly attacks, including kidnappings and suicide bombings, and played a significant role in developing the Qassam rocket project alongside Adnan al-Ghoul. After the killing of Salah Shahadeh in 2002, Deif assumed leadership of Hamas's military wing, a position he held for more than 20 years.
Israel repeatedly attempted to assassinate Deif, with failed operations in 1998, 2001, and 2002, the latter leaving him wounded but alive. In 2014, during Operation Protective Edge, an Israeli strike killed his wife and two of his children, though Deif survived. He was a central planner of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israeli border communities, known as "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood," alongside Yahya Sinwar. On July 13, 2024, the Israeli Air Force launched a targeted strike near Khan Younis that ultimately killed Deif. Although confirmation was delayed, the Israel Defense Forces officially announced his death on August 1, 2024, and Hamas confirmed it in January 2025, ending a decades-long manhunt.
