Israeli Economy Minister Nir Barkat Opens Up on Personal Struggles, Military Trauma, and Media Battles
Nir Barkat, Israel's Minister of Economy, shared an intimate and candid account of his life journey in a recent podcast interview on 'Kikar FM' with Eli Guthelf. Barkat recounted his early hardships, including washing stairs in a small Jerusalem apartment to afford living expenses, and the financial struggles he and his wife faced before achieving success in the high-tech sector. He described how his family’s first apartment cost $37,000 with a long mortgage and how he once ran a ceramic doll business that failed during the Gulf War.
Barkat also revealed the profound impact of his military service as a paratrooper, particularly a near-fatal incident during a 1980 raid in Lebanon where he was seriously wounded but managed to complete his mission. He shared a touching story about the mother of his fallen commander comforting him during recovery, a bond that endures to this day. His spiritual and public life was deeply influenced by his relationship with Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, who urged him to support others through empowerment rather than charity.
The minister discussed the personal toll of public service, including threats and hostility his family faced in Jerusalem, which affected his daughters’ school performance and caused emotional pain for him and his wife. Barkat disclosed a private agreement with his wife to keep him grounded and avoid conflicts of interest, noting that his extended family has made professional sacrifices to prevent any appearance of impropriety.
Barkat expressed strong indignation over recent investigative reports by Channel 12 accusing him and his brother of involvement in a dubious Instagram account purchase, vehemently denying any knowledge or involvement and accusing the channel’s owners of targeting him for political and business reasons. He dismissed the idea that anyone could bribe him, citing his substantial private wealth.
Addressing public criticism of his speech impediment, Barkat embraced his imperfections and encouraged others to accept their own challenges. He reflected on the meaning of wealth, emphasizing happiness and family over material possessions. When asked about his political future, Barkat affirmed his support for the current prime minister but hinted at ambitions for higher office, stating, "Talk to me the day after. It depends on the public."
