Guy Peleg Urges Nir Barkat to Sue Amit Segal Over Coup Allegations

Journalist Guy Peleg called on Economy Minister Nir Barkat to file a defamation lawsuit against political commentator Amit Segal following Segal's claims that Barkat attempted a coup to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Peleg emphasized the seriousness of the accusation and its timing, noting that Segal explicitly alleged Barkat tried to orchestrate a leadership change just before the upcoming primaries. Peleg urged Barkat to respond clearly and not let financial concerns prevent him from suing, stating, "Barkat, money is not the problem, Amit is begging... or maybe... you did try a coup?"

Segal's allegations, made public recently, assert that between October 2023 and March 2024, Barkat consulted with advisors on plans to oust Netanyahu. According to Segal, Barkat sought to topple the government budget, opposed the government from the right, and later encircled it from the left. Segal also claimed Barkat met with ministers, Knesset members, and media figures to explain why he could lead the country. The plot was reportedly exposed in late November 2023 when Minister Haim Katz informed Netanyahu, prompting the prime minister to dismantle the effort through negotiations, promotions, and sending one participant abroad.

Segal concluded by demanding Barkat take legal action if he denies the claims, stating, "If Barkat denies what is written here, the minimum required is a huge defamation lawsuit tomorrow morning." Peleg's call to action highlights the political tension surrounding these serious accusations ahead of the primaries.
