Yael Bar Zohar's Billboard Image Vandalized Again in Rishon Lezion Neighborhood

The recurring issue of women’s images being erased or defaced in public spaces has struck again, this time in a neighborhood in Rishon Lezion. A billboard advertisement for one of Israel’s major health funds featuring actress Yael Bar Zohar was vandalized, with her image painted over in black and completely obscured. This phenomenon, often linked to gender exclusion in public areas, is not new and has expanded beyond ultra-Orthodox communities to various locations across the country.

The perpetrators behind this act remain unknown. However, similar incidents have targeted images of other Israeli public figures such as Omer Nudelman, Rotem Sela, as well as actresses, models, politicians, doctors, and even photos of hostages while in captivity. Last month, "Haaretz" reported that Jerusalem municipality fined activists from the "Shetlu" organization 475 shekels each for placing protest signs at a light rail station. These activists were campaigning against the erasure of women’s images in public spaces, where such vandalism had previously occurred.

Despite the frequency of these attacks, no effective measures have been taken to prevent them, highlighting ongoing challenges related to gender representation in Israel’s public sphere.
