Israeli Couple Attacked During Pro-Palestinian Protest in Athens

An Israeli couple was assaulted during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Athens on Sunday, part of the "Day of Rage" protests held across Greece. Videos circulated on social media showed the couple being identified as Israelis and attacked by several protesters. A bystander intervened to help them escape, physically shielding them as they were pushed and kicked by demonstrators who shouted slogans such as "Free Palestine" and "Zionists are murderers." The Israelis did not respond with violence and appeared fearful while trying to leave the area.

The incident occurred amid widespread protests organized by pro-Palestinian groups including March to Gaza, BDS Greece, the Palestinian community in Greece, and the Stop the War coalition. These protests aimed to oppose Israeli military actions in Gaza and the West Bank and to criticize the Greek government for its close diplomatic, military, and economic ties with Israel. Demonstrations took place in Athens, Thessaloniki, and various tourist locations across Greece.

Following the events, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a heightened caution advisory for Israelis in Greece, urging them to conceal Israeli symbols and avoid protest areas. The "Day of Rage" was declared last month by activist networks calling for nationwide protests to express solidarity with Palestinians and opposition to Israeli policies.
