Netanyahu Offers MK Eliyahu Revivo Ambassador Role to Avoid Likud Primary Challenge

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's circle recently proposed that Eliyahu Revivo, the Deputy Speaker of the Knesset and Likud MK, be appointed as Israel's ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. This offer was made in exchange for Revivo not running in the upcoming Likud primary elections. The appointment would replace the current ambassador Yossi Shelly, who remains in the post despite being recalled to Israel last year due to controversies.

According to sources within Likud, Revivo is not the only MK to receive such offers. Several other party members have been offered various positions to dissuade them from appearing on the party's candidate list. Netanyahu's strategy aims to shape a loyal Likud list and prevent independent-minded MKs who might cooperate with political rivals from gaining influence.

Yossi Shelly was recalled from the UAE following incidents that raised concerns about his conduct, including being seen in a bar behaving in ways deemed inappropriate for a diplomat. Despite his recall, he continues to serve de facto as ambassador. Netanyahu's efforts to control the party list reflect his concerns not only about the upcoming elections but also about the post-election parliamentary dynamics and loyalty within Likud.
