Yair Golan Faces Backlash for Breaking Promise to Reserve Knesset Spot for Einav Tsangooker

Yair Golan, chairman of the Democratic Party, is under intense criticism from media figures after failing to fulfill his promise to reserve a Knesset seat for Einav Tsangooker, mother of former captive Matan Tsangooker. Raviv Drucker, a prominent journalist, condemned Golan's apology as manipulative, accusing him of insincerely regretting the broken promise and urging him to admit the truth honestly.

Yaron Avraham, a political correspondent for Channel 12 News, accused Golan of misleading Tsangooker for political gain and abandoning her once the issue faded from public attention. Michael Shemesh, political reporter for Channel 13 News, questioned Golan's integrity, calling his actions particularly despicable given that Tsangooker could have run in the primaries if not deceived. Binyamin Ashkenazi from Israel Hayom added that Golan's apology was insufficient, emphasizing that political promises, while not legally enforceable, should be honored out of principle.

The controversy also sparked a public dispute between journalists Amit Segal and Raviv Drucker. Segal criticized Drucker for not reacting as strongly when Naftali Bennett broke a signed promise not to join a coalition with Meretz, Yair Lapid, and Ra'am, suggesting possible hypocrisy. Drucker responded by questioning Segal's journalistic integrity. Segal further argued that Golan erred by initially offering Tsangooker the reserved spot.

The incident highlights tensions within Israeli politics regarding trust and accountability, especially concerning promises made to families of captives. Golan’s next steps remain unclear amid growing public and media scrutiny.
