Indian Air Force transport plane crashes on landing, five crew members killed
A military transport aircraft from the Indian Air Force, an Antonov An-32, crashed on Saturday while attempting to land at the Rorhia Air Force base in Jorhat, in Assam in northeast India. The impact triggered a large fire at the site, and initial videos from the base showed thick smoke and flames rising from the airfield.
Five crew members were killed in the crash. The co-pilot survived and was taken for medical treatment. Indian media said the aircraft belonged to Squadron 43 and was on a transport mission.
In an official post on its Twitter account, the Indian Air Force confirmed that the squadron commander and four other crew members died in the line of duty. The service said it expressed deep condolences and solidarity with the affected families, and announced that an investigation has been opened to determine what caused the crash.
