Brother of Fallen Soldier Eli Gamzu Enlists in IDF Paratroopers to Continue His Legacy

Liam Aaron Gamzu has enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces' Paratroopers Brigade, following in the footsteps of his late brother, Staff Sergeant Eli Gamzu, who was killed on October 7. Liam expressed his determination to serve as a combat soldier and contribute to the country, stating, "Eli did his part for the country, now it's my turn." He emphasized that he wants to be recognized as a soldier in his own right, not just as "the brother of a hero." Liam's parents supported his decision to serve in an infantry combat unit, with his father, Shmuel, explaining that they could not stop him from pursuing his life and goals.

Alongside Liam, other new recruits joined the Paratroopers Brigade, including Harry Newat, a lone soldier who immigrated from Australia eight months ago. Newat cited rising antisemitism in Australia as a motivating factor for his enlistment and expressed pride in joining what he called "the best unit in the world." Another recruit, Raz Goshen, is continuing a family tradition of service in the Paratroopers, noting that his father, grandfather, and much of his family served in the same unit.

This recruitment is part of a broader series titled "Welcome to the IDF," which highlights new soldiers joining various branches of the Israeli military. The series aims to showcase the diverse motivations and backgrounds of those enlisting, reflecting a wide commitment to national service.
