Barak Bachar Highlights Maccabi Haifa's Defensive Progress After Toto Cup Win Over Bnei Sakhnin

Maccabi Haifa secured their second consecutive victory in the Toto Cup on Saturday, defeating Bnei Sakhnin 1-0 at Doha Stadium. This win placed Haifa third in Group A. Coach Barak Bachar praised the team's improved defensive performance and increased aggression, noting that the players are gradually reaching better form as they work to build a cohesive squad. "It was a better game today, not great, but with more aggression and better pressure," Bachar said. "We didn’t concede, unlike previous matches, and opponents didn’t create easy chances." He emphasized the importance of making defensive solidity part of the team’s DNA rather than a one-time effort.

Addressing the pressure surrounding the club, Bachar acknowledged the high expectations at Maccabi Haifa, where "after every loss, it’s a scandal." He expressed confidence in the existing players, stating the challenge lies in team chemistry rather than reinforcements. With the league opener just two weeks away, he stressed the need to continue improving. Regarding squad updates, Bachar reported that Andrea Novakovic, who missed the match due to a virus, is expected back next week, and Omri Glazer, recovering from a minor accident, should resume training soon.

Manuel Benson, returning from a long injury, came off the bench and impressed Bachar, who called him "a very significant player" with much to contribute. Midfielder Iyad Khalili, who recently rejoined Haifa after a season at Ra'anana, expressed his commitment to the club and his ambition to eventually play alongside his brother Anan.

On the opposing side, Bnei Sakhnin coach Yossi Abuksis lamented the absence of a natural striker, which he said hampered their attack.
