IDF Opens First Haredi Underground Shelter at Tel Nof Air Base
The Israel Defense Forces has opened its first underground shelter, or dik, designed specifically for Haredi soldiers at Tel Nof Air Base in the Air Force. Last week, about 20 Haredi technicians were assigned there after completing a first-level maintenance course at the technical base in Haifa.
The soldiers will begin maintaining F-15 fighter jets in Squadron 106, known as "Hot HaNetz," and will join the squadron's operational maintenance team. Their training lasted about two months and was adapted to Haredi lifestyles.
The IDF said the move is part of an effort to expand enlistment from the Haredi community and to integrate more soldiers into professional and meaningful roles in the Air Force. The service said the broader Haredi tracks include adjustments during training and service, while preserving religious observance and allowing advancement to command and officer positions.
According to the army, the initiative is meant to meet operational needs while also widening service options for Haredi recruits who want to enter professional roles in the defense system.
