IDF Strikes in South Lebanon Injure Lebanese Soldier Amid Rising Tensions

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an attack in southern Lebanon targeting a bulldozer in the village of Al-Mansouri, resulting in a Lebanese soldier sustaining light injuries, according to the Lebanese army, which confirmed the incident. The IDF acknowledged the strike. This escalation follows a deadly incident in the village of Majdal Zoun, where two reservist officers, Lt. Col. (res.) Harel Birnstok and Maj. (res.) Tamir Kinin, were killed and four other soldiers were seriously wounded by an explosive device.

In response to the Majdal Zoun incident, the IDF planned a large-scale operation in the village, which was ultimately halted by political leadership, including Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman. The IDF also bombed several buildings in the village identified as Hezbollah command centers and weapons depots. The Lebanese army reported that its forces entered the village to clear rubble and remove weapons before allowing residents to return. Prior to the Lebanese army's entry, the IDF fired numerous artillery shells toward the village.

An ongoing IDF investigation is examining when the explosive device that caused the Majdal Zoun casualties was planted. One theory suggests it was placed days before the IDF's reserve commando brigade 511 took control of the village. Hezbollah had heavily fortified the area with dozens of militants, observation posts, ambush points, and fortified structures, as the village sits atop a strategic underground network built by Iran. This infrastructure compelled Hezbollah to maintain a strong defensive presence in the village.

The recent escalation underscores the fragile security situation in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah's military infrastructure and Israeli military operations continue to provoke tensions.
