Herzliya Launches Israel’s First AI-Driven Traffic Light System to Cut Wait Times
Herzliya municipality and Netivei Israel have introduced Israel’s first AI-based traffic light management system at the Kfar Shmaryahu intersection. Unlike traditional traffic lights that operate on fixed schedules, this new system uses real-time traffic data and artificial intelligence to dynamically adjust signal timings. The goal is to reduce unnecessary waiting, improve vehicle flow, and help public transportation maintain schedules.
Developed by Israeli startup ITC and selected through Herzliya’s Move2Urban initiative, the system integrates with existing cameras and traffic controllers, avoiding costly roadworks or sensor installations. It monitors traffic up to 700 meters from the intersection, identifying cars, buses, bicycles, and pedestrians with 99% accuracy. Based on live data such as queue lengths and speeds, it can switch among ten different signal plans to optimize flow, for example extending green lights on congested routes or shortening waits when roads are clear.
The pilot began in late May, with data collection and learning in June, and full operation starting in July. Early results prompted Herzliya to fund expansion to three more key intersections. Nationwide data from Netivei Israel shows the technology can reduce red light wait times by about 25%, cut bus delays by up to 30%, and improve overall traffic flow by over 20%.
Herzliya officials emphasize that AI enables traffic management upgrades without replacing existing infrastructure. Mayor Yariv Fisher highlighted the project’s success in using real-time data to ease congestion and enhance safety. Transportation portfolio holder Eyal Fabian noted the technology’s potential to shorten travel times and improve residents’ quality of life.
