Common Mistakes Cause Towels to Smell Musty Despite Washing, Experts Say

Many people experience the frustration of towels smelling musty shortly after washing, even though they come out of the machine clean. Experts explain that the issue often lies not in the washing process itself but in habits related to drying, storage, and detergent use that promote moisture retention and bacterial growth in the fabric.

A frequent mistake is leaving wet towels in a heap, on the floor, or inside the laundry basket, where lack of airflow encourages mildew odors. Towels should be fully spread out to dry in a well-ventilated area immediately after use. Placing wet towels directly into the laundry basket or leaving them damp in the washing machine drum for hours also contributes to unpleasant smells.

Using excessive detergent or fabric softener can worsen the problem. Leftover detergent residues trap dirt and odors in towel fibers, while too much fabric softener can coat fibers, reducing absorbency and allowing buildup. It is recommended to follow detergent instructions carefully and reduce or skip fabric softener periodically.

Overloading the washing machine drum prevents towels from moving freely and rinsing properly, leaving dirt and residues behind. Additionally, forgetting to promptly remove towels from the machine after the cycle ends creates a warm, moist environment ideal for odor development.

Before folding, towels must be completely dry, including thick areas and edges, to avoid trapping moisture inside. Regular cleaning of washing machine parts like the rubber seal and detergent drawer is also advised to prevent buildup that can transfer odors to laundry.

To restore fresh smells, wash towels separately at the correct temperature with measured detergent amounts, remove them immediately after washing, and dry thoroughly in a ventilated space. The key to preventing musty towel odors is less moisture, less detergent overload, and better airflow rather than relying on perfumes or fabric softeners.
