Naftali Bennett Rejects Cooperation With Ultra-Orthodox Parties Over Draft Evasion Support

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett gave his first interview in over five years to the ultra-Orthodox media, firmly ruling out any cooperation with ultra-Orthodox factions such as Yahadut HaTorah. This statement comes amid hints from Yahadut HaTorah about potential collaboration with the opposition bloc 'Change Bloc' after upcoming elections. Bennett declared unequivocally, "The door is closed to anyone who supports draft evasion." He emphasized that no supporter of draft evasion would be part of his cabinet, explicitly stating that Shas leader Aryeh Deri would not be a partner.

Bennett criticized the ultra-Orthodox parties for their stance on military conscription, calling it a "shame and disgrace" that some families pride themselves on draft evasion. He explained that the term "draft evasion" refers to those who support legislation to exempt yeshiva students from military service. Bennett views this issue as a critical existential threat to the Jewish state, highlighting that 15% of Israel's population lives in a separate ultra-Orthodox society disconnected from the rest of the country.

He warned that any government unwilling to address this issue is futile, stressing that if it is not resolved now, it never will be. Bennett challenged ultra-Orthodox leaders who claim they are no longer committed to Netanyahu, telling them that they have no partner in him because he demands universal conscription. He accused them of avoiding recruitment for years and credited the High Court of Justice for enforcing the draft. Bennett concluded by saying his door remains open only to those willing to be partners in Israel with a law mandating military service for all.
