Faster Walking Speed in Seniors Linked to Lower Risk of Cognitive Decline and Brain Aging
A new study led by researchers from Stony Brook University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that individuals aged 80 and above who walked at faster speeds had a significantly lower risk of developing cognitive impairment in subsequent years. The research, published in Neurology, analyzed data from nearly 4,000 elderly participants across the US, Europe, and Asia who were free of Alzheimer’s or dementia at the study’s start. Those classified as "Super Movers," walking about 1.3 meters per second (approximately 4.7 km/h), showed a 51% reduced risk of cognitive decline compared to slower walkers.
Further analysis using data from the LonGenity study revealed that Super Movers experienced slower declines in memory and other cognitive functions, along with better preservation of hippocampal volume, a brain region critical for memory. Similarly, data from the RUSH Memory and Aging Project showed that these faster walkers maintained better cognitive function before death and had lower rates of Alzheimer’s and dementia diagnoses, despite similar levels of amyloid protein deposits in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.
Neurologist Dr. Sandra Benizri from Assuta Ramat Hahayal explained that while amyloid accumulation was present in both groups, Super Movers did not develop clinical symptoms, suggesting greater brain resilience or cognitive reserve. She emphasized that walking speed may reflect both physical fitness and intact cognitive-motor integration, as walking requires coordination between motor and cognitive systems.
The study highlights the importance of maintaining physical activity in advanced age but does not suggest that all elderly individuals should immediately increase their walking speed. Instead, increasing overall physical activity safely and regularly can support brain health. Dr. Benizri noted that exercise improves cerebral blood flow, vascular health, and mood, all factors that contribute to cognitive preservation. The findings establish a correlation but do not prove causation, leaving open whether faster walking directly prevents cognitive decline or simply indicates better overall health and slower aging.
