Fuel Shortage in West Bank Exposes Palestinian Authority Power Struggles and Financial Crisis

Palestinian residents across the West Bank have faced a severe fuel shortage for nearly three weeks, leading to station closures, disputes among drivers, and widespread fuel hoarding. The crisis has revealed deeper issues within the Palestinian Authority (PA), including financial difficulties and internal power struggles.

The PA claims that delays in receiving clearance revenues from Israel, which are tax funds collected by Israel on behalf of the PA under the Oslo Accords, have hindered payments to Israeli fuel suppliers. Additionally, the PA cites logistical challenges and pressure on the supply chain as factors worsening the shortage. However, fuel station owners accuse the PA of misusing funds intended for fuel purchases for other purposes, contributing to the crisis.

Opposition figures and security officials within the PA suggest that political and business rivalries are also at play behind the scenes. Sources in Ramallah told N12 that the PA initially tried to project control by announcing fuel deliveries and urging the public not to hoard fuel. As the crisis dragged on, the PA shifted some blame onto Israel, citing financial and supply pressures, while attempting to deflect public criticism from its leadership.

The majority of fuel in the West Bank is purchased from Israeli companies by the Palestinian Fuel Authority and distributed locally. The ongoing delay in clearance revenue transfers has strained the PA’s ability to pay suppliers, exacerbating the shortage. Meanwhile, internal disputes within the PA, particularly among Fatah factions, have intensified over control of the fuel market.
