Yinon Levi Urges Southern District Prosecutors to Reconsider Charges Citing Recent Security Threats
Yinon Levi has formally requested the Southern District Prosecutor's Office to review its decision to indict him. Levi, who faces charges after fatally shooting a Palestinian during a confrontation in southern Mount Hebron, argues that recent security developments highlight the dangers of deterring civilians and soldiers from using weapons for self-defense. In a strongly worded letter, he contends that the prosecution’s approach risks endangering lives by discouraging defensive actions amid escalating violence.
Levi claims he acted to protect himself and a minor who was attacked by rioters. He points to a series of recent violent incidents, including a deadly attack near Gilead Farm where two Israeli officers, Lt. Col. Yuval Ezra and Capt. Benyahu Malt, were killed. Levi asserts that fear of prosecution influenced the victims’ hesitation to shoot back, which contributed to their deaths. He also references a near-weapon-snatching incident from a soldier in Susya, where the soldier refrained from firing due to concerns about legal consequences.
Levi criticizes the indictment for ignoring the circumstances of his case, emphasizing that prosecuting someone who defended a minor against a stone-throwing mob fails to uphold standards for preserving human life. He warns that prosecuting civilians acting in self-defense sends a harmful message that may cause settlers and soldiers to hesitate in life-threatening situations. Levi stresses that his intervention prevented a greater tragedy and expresses relief that no families are mourning as a result.
Concluding his letter, Levi sharply condemns the prosecution’s policy, claiming it effectively supports terrorism and endangers more civilians. He warns that if his request for reconsideration is denied, he will fight the charges in court, stating that defending his innocence is preferable to failing to act during danger and suffering worse consequences.
