IDF Chief Strongly Opposes Controversial Arrest Freeze Law Amid Military Manpower Concerns

IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi has reiterated his strong opposition to the "Arrest Freeze Law," which recently passed its second and third readings in the Knesset. Kochavi had previously expressed his concerns in a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chair Boaz Bismuth, warning that the military is facing a severe manpower shortage and cannot support granting mass exemptions from prosecution.

Despite the Supreme Court issuing a conditional order freezing the law's implementation, Kochavi continued to criticize the political leadership for advancing the legislation against the military's warnings. According to a report by Yaron Avraham on Channel 12 News, during a General Staff forum held about two and a half weeks ago with senior IDF officers, Kochavi described the law as "fundamentally flawed" and expressed doubt that it would withstand judicial scrutiny.

Kochavi emphasized that the military has repeatedly voiced its position in various committees but was ignored. His directive to closely monitor developments reflects deep frustration within the military leadership regarding the government's handling of recruitment and enforcement issues. The IDF is particularly concerned about the unclear support from civilian police for military police enforcement amid the frozen legal framework.
