After 53 years, the NBA championship returned to Madison Square Garden on Sunday, as the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the Finals to claim their first title since 1973. The win gave Knicks fans a historic moment and completed a long-awaited championship run.

Jalen Brunson was the star of the night and delivered one of the greatest Finals performances in league history. The guard finished with 45 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 41 minutes, shooting 14-for-27 from the field and leading New York’s comeback to the title. His effort made him only the second player ever to score 45 points in a Finals clincher, joining Michael Jordan.

After the game, Brunson said, “This is why I came to New York, this is everything I dreamed of.” The celebration also carried a personal dimension when he embraced his father, Rick Brunson, who works as an assistant on Mike Brown’s coaching staff. Rick Brunson had played for the Knicks in an NBA Finals against the same San Antonio team 27 years earlier and lost in five games.

Jalen Brunson was only three years old then, and now he has brought the championship back to New York. Since arriving in the city in the summer of 2022, he has become the franchise’s clear leader and now adds Finals MVP honors to an historic title. Knicks owner James Dolan marked the moment by telling fans, “New York, I’m sorry it took so long, but here we are. And I hope the next time won’t take so long.”
