Negev Residents Rally in Support of Beersheba Deputy Mayor Amid Assault Allegations

Dozens of residents from the Negev gathered at Beersheba City Hall to show support for Deputy Mayor Shimon Touboul, following a left-wing protest demanding his removal. Touboul faces accusations of assaulting two Bedouin workers at a gas station in the village of Gaza, including hitting one worker who played Arabic music, pushing another, and brandishing his personal weapon. The supporters, organized by Touboul's backers, praised his public service and extensive military reserve duty during the recent war. Having recently joined the Noam party led by MK Avi Maoz, Touboul received backing from locals opposing calls for his dismissal, emphasizing his democratic election and representation of his constituents. Protesters urged Beersheba's mayor not to yield to public pressure ahead of a city council meeting, arguing the opposition does not reflect the majority view in Beersheba and the Negev. Organizers stated they came to stand behind Touboul and reject what they described as a politically motivated smear campaign, highlighting his hundreds of days in reserve service protecting Israeli citizens. They also called for a fair legal process rather than a "kangaroo court," asserting their belief that the truth will eventually emerge. Support for Touboul is expected to continue as the case develops.
