Israeli Film Board Bans Under-18 Viewers from Horror Movie 'Ice Cream Man'

Ahead of the release of the horror film "Ice Cream Man" in Israeli cinemas on Thursday, the Film Review Board issued an unusual directive banning viewers under 18 from attending, even if accompanied by adults. The board's official letter instructed cinemas to strictly enforce the age restriction and clearly display it in all promotional materials, including advertisements and press releases. The directive emphasized that no children under 18 should be present in theaters screening the film, regardless of parental accompaniment.

The board explained the rare restriction by highlighting the film's disturbing content, which transforms innocent childhood motifs such as ice cream, sweets, and school into a "machine of horror and murder." Unlike abstract or fictional horror films, "Ice Cream Man" uses everyday childhood elements to create sustained fear and severe psychological impact on minors. The film contains intense horror, blood, and graphic violence, which the board said outweighs any artistic or social message, prioritizing children's mental health over freedom of expression.

The film's plot centers on a seemingly peaceful summer day in a quiet town that turns into a nightmare when a mysterious ice cream vendor distributes free popsicles to children. Soon, the children become uncontrollable killers targeting adults, including parents and teachers. The Film Review Board adopted the same age classification as in the United States and made its decision during a professional protocol meeting on July 22, 2026.

This strict age ban is an exceptional measure reflecting concerns about the film's potential harm to minors. The Ministry of Culture and Sports supports the enforcement of these guidelines to protect young audiences from the film's graphic and psychologically damaging content.
