Gadi Eizenkot Proposes State Inquiry into October 7 Massacre, Criticizes Netanyahu

Gadi Eizenkot, chairman of the Yashar party, presented a draft proposal for a state commission of inquiry into the October 7, 2023 massacre during a joint press conference at Kibbutz Nir Oz. The proposal, co-authored by Gil Avriel and hostage survivor Gadi Mozes, aims to investigate the political, military, and civilian decisions leading up to the attack, covering the decade since Operation Protective Edge. The draft suggests forming the commission under the State Inquiry Committee Law, with the government recommending the president consult with other senior officials on its composition. The proposal will be publicly circulated for feedback until October 7, 2026, to enhance public trust and involvement.

Eizenkot sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government for evading responsibility and delaying the establishment of such a commission nearly three years after the tragedy. He emphasized the heroism of soldiers and civilians on that day but stressed that the war’s ultimate goal, to dismantle Hamas and Islamic Jihad’s military and governmental power, has not yet been achieved. When asked about appointing Yair Golan as defense minister, Eizenkot diplomatically replied that there are more experienced candidates. Regarding calls by Naftali Bennett to sever ties with Qatar, Eizenkot cautioned against declaring Qatar an enemy state as an election gimmick, advocating for a thorough examination.

Eizenkot also addressed concerns about election integrity, acknowledging justified fears of undemocratic processes. He concluded by expressing hope for the Gaza envelope communities’ revival, envisioning population growth and prosperity as a response to the October 7 attacks. Hostage survivor Gadi Mozes praised the initiative as a vital step toward national healing and security, noting that many residents remain hesitant to return without a formal inquiry and lessons learned. He urged the next government to establish the commission to ensure genuine rehabilitation for Nir Oz, the Gaza envelope, and Israel as a whole.
