Civilian Drone Disrupts Operations at Ben Gurion Airport, Halting Flights

A civilian drone intrusion into the airspace of Ben Gurion Airport on Wednesday morning caused significant disruptions, leading to a complete halt of takeoffs and landings during one of the busiest operational periods. The incident prompted the Director General of the Ministry of Transport to convene a special meeting to investigate the circumstances of the drone breach and the response measures, aiming to understand how such a sensitive facility's operations were compromised.

This event occurs amid ongoing national discussions in Israel about potentially imposing a comprehensive ban on drone flights. The issue was recently addressed by the Security Cabinet, where the defense establishment advocated for considering such a ban as part of preparations for a possible large-scale conflict with Iran. Although no final decision has been made, the prospect of banning drones has sparked strong opposition from industry stakeholders.

Pini Youngman, president of TSG, a company specializing in air traffic control systems, told N12 that banning drones in Israel would be unenforceable given the millions of drones in the country, most operated by children. He emphasized the difficulty in preventing, monitoring, or enforcing such a prohibition, highlighting the challenges authorities would face if the ban were implemented.
