Likud Minister Dudi Amsalem Welcomes Former IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot Joining Likud

Likud Minister Dudi Amsalem expressed openness to former IDF Chief of Staff and Yesh Atid party leader Gadi Eizenkot joining the ruling Likud party during a Wednesday interview on 103FM's 'Sheva Tisha'. Amsalem said he would be happy if Eizenkot, who emerged from a military background often associated with left-wing circles, adopted Likud's political stance, especially regarding a tougher approach toward Palestinians following the October 7 attacks. "I have sympathy for Gadi Eizenkot. I would be glad if he came tomorrow and said he embraces Likud's lines," Amsalem stated.

However, Amsalem cautioned that senior security figures like Eizenkot cannot immediately transition into top political roles such as prime minister without gaining experience within the party and Knesset. He emphasized the need for a gradual political career progression. Amsalem also offered to support Eizenkot's advancement within Likud if he chooses to join and aligns with the party's worldview.

In the latter part of the interview, Amsalem addressed internal Likud turmoil following the party's court ruling that barred current Knesset members and ministers from running in regional primaries. He backed the decision as fair and consistent with longstanding party rules. Nonetheless, he criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request for eight guaranteed spots on the party list, calling the number unusually high compared to the typical two or three.

Amsalem concluded by underscoring Likud's democratic nature, asserting it is a popular movement independent of any single leader, including Netanyahu. He suggested that even if Netanyahu were to control the entire list, the party would continue beyond his leadership.
