Former Israeli Intelligence Chief Says Ground Operation Could Destabilize Iran Amid US Negotiations

Tamir Hayman, former head of Israeli Military Intelligence (AMAN) and current director of the Institute for National Security Studies, spoke on Radio 103FM regarding the renewed US diplomatic efforts with Iran under President Trump. Hayman described the current situation as a return to diplomacy, noting that the US president has placed negotiations at the center of his strategy. He mentioned reports about the reduction of Patriot missile batteries and leaks about the US's capability to strike Iran again, suggesting these moves are part of a calculated decision to return to the negotiating table.

Addressing the possibility of a ground operation in Iran, Hayman emphasized Iran's vast territory and its obsession with sovereignty, stating that any ground incursion would undermine Iran's perception of its immunity zone. However, he cautioned that the US is likely not ready to undertake such a risky military adventure at this time. Hayman also criticized the US strategic approach, arguing that American negotiators underestimate the importance of ideology and religion in Iran, mistakenly believing that economic negotiations alone can compel Iran to abandon its ideological stance. He asserted this misunderstanding is a critical gap in the US's strategic assessment of the Middle East.
