US Depletes Nearly 80% of THAAD Missile Interceptors Amid Iran Conflict

The United States has used approximately 80% of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile interceptors during recent military operations, according to a CNN report on August 5, 2026. The US military also expended about half of its Patriot missile interceptors, another key air defense system. Reuters further reported that nearly all of the US's long-range precision missiles, including about half of its Tomahawk cruise missiles, were deployed in the conflict with Iran.

US military officials have expressed concern over the dangerously low levels of missile stockpiles at the Pentagon. Prior to the conflict, the US possessed around 2,200 Patriot interceptors and 452 THAAD interceptors, which protect American forces and allies in the Middle East. Gulf states allied with the US have voiced worries about the diminished air defense capabilities, fearing they may be vulnerable if tensions with Iran escalate again.

Reports indicate that the depletion of missile inventories influenced President Donald Trump's decision to cancel a major planned strike against Iran. Senior US officials, including Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Kain, highlighted the risks posed by the shortage in the event of a broader conflict.

The shortage affects both defensive and offensive capabilities. Experts told CNN that the Pentagon receives only about 15 new Tomahawk missiles and 20 Patriot interceptors monthly, a rate insufficient to quickly replenish stocks. The Department of Defense has recently accelerated production efforts, signing agreements to increase production of Patriot and THAAD missile rocket motors. However, analysts estimate it will take years to fully restore the US's advanced missile inventory due to the lengthy manufacturing process.
