IDF Chief Advances Military Robotics and Force Building in Classified Staff Forum
On Monday, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir convened a classified status discussion with the General Staff forum focused on force building amid ongoing tensions in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. Zamir emphasized that "today's force building is tomorrow's victory," highlighting the need to deepen force development with a forward-looking three-year budget perspective.
Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Tamir Yadai addressed internal and external processes, though his presentation was reportedly unclear and raised questions about the expected increased involvement in force building. The meeting extended to three and a half hours, during which Zamir made several key decisions since taking office, including upgrading the Armored Corps and Engineering Corps, establishing reserve brigades, accelerating production of various tank models, and significantly increasing the integration of aerial and ground robots.
A central focus was on robotics, with plans to establish an autonomous systems branch encompassing air, land, and soon sea platforms. The multi-dimensional unit combining advanced weaponry will be expanded to serve as a technological engine for the entire IDF. The Technology and Logistics Directorate's Combat Engineering Unit received directives to boost procurement and accelerate robotic developments, some of which matured in the past year.
Other classified topics were discussed during the session. Notably, the 96th Division under Brigadier General Oren Simcha is receiving General Staff attention for building reserve brigades equipped with armored JLTV vehicles and advanced combat gear. The Ramon Infantry Brigade (261), formed from Golani Brigade reservists, is set to transfer under the Sinai Division in the South Command. The 38th Training Division, established in 2026 following lessons from the October 7 attacks, includes key training bases and is preparing for potential command of the West Bank Division.
The Engineering Corps is advancing unique weaponry, reserve forces, and support tools proven effective in underground warfare, outpost construction, and deep enemy maneuvering. The critical Hachshmonaim Brigade continues to play a vital operational role with measured recruitment supported by the Personnel Directorate. The Air Force is collaborating with the Ministry of Defense to advance procurement of fighter jets, refueling aircraft, attack helicopters, and advanced munitions.
