Israeli Academia Must Retain Women Physicists to Sustain Scientific Leadership
Professor Avi Domb highlights the significant progress women have made in physics in Israel, noting that female participation in national physics competitions now approaches 50%. However, he warns that the main challenge has shifted from entry into the field to retaining and advancing women in academia and research. This retention is crucial as Israel faces a shortage of scientists and engineers, making the loss of talented female researchers a setback for both academia and industry.
Domb explains that difficulties arise mainly during advanced degrees and experimental research stages, which require continuous years of lab work, team management, and securing research grants. These demanding career phases often coincide with women’s childbearing and childcare years, creating objective time constraints that can delay or derail research careers.
He argues that the solution is not affirmative action but reforming incentive structures. Public funding for scholarships dedicated to women in advanced degrees would remove financial barriers and allow selection based solely on excellence. Additionally, promotion criteria must adapt to life realities without lowering academic standards, evaluating researchers by the quality and impact of their work rather than just publication quantity. Women whose research periods overlap with pregnancy or childcare should not be judged as if they had uninterrupted research time.
Domb emphasizes that this is not only a matter of equal opportunity but a national interest. With Israel’s ongoing shortage of researchers, every outstanding female scientist lost due to structural barriers represents a loss to the country’s innovation and competitiveness. Investing in removing these barriers is a strategic investment in Israel’s human capital and scientific future.
