Experts Debunk TikTok Trend Claiming Honey Aids Weight Loss
A recent TikTok and Instagram trend claims that consuming a teaspoon of honey before sleep or in warm water in the morning can promote fat burning, reduce hunger, and accelerate metabolism. This viral health fad has garnered millions of views, but scientific experts caution that these claims lack solid evidence.
Research reviews and a meta-analysis of 14 controlled studies found no proof that honey consumption alone leads to weight loss. While some studies suggest honey might be a slightly better substitute for white sugar due to its different composition and milder impact on blood sugar levels, more human research is needed. Experts emphasize that honey is still a sugar source, containing about 20 calories per teaspoon and 60 calories per tablespoon, so adding it without reducing other sugars or calories is unlikely to aid weight loss.
The popularity of the trend may stem from the hypothesis that a small amount of carbohydrates before sleep provides energy overnight, but no quality studies confirm that honey "burns fat" or boosts metabolism during sleep. Health professionals stress that these viral claims are not medically endorsed and that effective weight loss depends on balanced nutrition, calorie deficit, physical activity, and adequate sleep. Honey can be part of a balanced diet and serve as a sugar alternative but should not be viewed as a weight loss solution.
