Iranian Hardliners Removed From Key Parliamentary Security Committee Roles

Iranian parliament has removed two senior hardline figures, Ebrahim Razai and Mahmoud Nabavian, from their leading roles in the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee. The decision, reported on July 14 by opposition channel Iran International, came just one day after the parliament resumed sessions following a four-month recess. Razai, previously the committee's spokesperson, and Nabavian, its deputy chairman, were known for their staunch opposition to negotiations with the United States. Their removal signals a shift toward a more balanced committee stance that may support diplomatic talks with Washington.

Razai, a prominent conservative voice active on social media, had frequently criticized Israel, the US, and any potential negotiations with Washington. Despite losing his spokesperson role, he remains a committee member and continues to issue strong statements warning of Iran's military capabilities and readiness to respond to any attacks. Nabavian also opposed talks with the US, describing any agreement as a total loss for Iran and accusing political rivals of trying to sideline hardliners.

The new committee leadership, announced on July 14 by Iranian state media, retained Ebrahim Azizi as chairman, with Abbas Maktadai and Amir Hayat Mokadam as deputy chairmen. Hassan Kashkavavi replaced Razai as the committee's spokesperson. The reshuffle reflects internal parliamentary efforts to moderate the committee's approach amid ongoing tensions with the US and regional adversaries.

Razai's recent posts emphasized Iran's growing defensive capabilities and threatened comprehensive retaliation against any enemy attack, including potential nuclear doctrine changes and strategic maneuvers in key maritime chokepoints. Nabavian criticized Iran's foreign minister and parliamentary speaker for their handling of US relations, vowing to resist what he called a political "coup" against hardliners. This development highlights the complex power dynamics within Iran's political elite as they navigate external pressures and internal divisions.
