Israeli Hospitals Use 3D Printing to Revolutionize Organ and Bone Transplants
Israeli medical centers are pioneering the use of advanced 3D printing technology to produce human replacement parts, transforming modern medicine. This technology enables surgeons to reconstruct infants' limbs, replace skull sections, and create corneas from human cells, significantly improving surgical precision and patient recovery.
A notable case is Noam, a Golani Brigade officer severely injured in the Gaza Strip during Operation Sword of Iron. After suffering a critical head injury, surgeons at Ichilov Hospital used 3D-printed bone implants to reconstruct his skull, saving his life. The implants, produced in the Levin Center for Surgical Innovation within the hospital, resemble a startup environment and utilize titanium and other materials to restore anatomy accurately.
The center also treats complex cases like a three-year-old girl with bone cancer, where custom titanium implants prevent limb amputation. These implants act as biological scaffolds, allowing natural bone to regenerate within them. However, the long-term possibility of removing implants and leaving only natural bone remains uncertain.
At Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, a groundbreaking procedure was performed in December 2025, transplanting a biologically printed cornea made from human cells. Developed by Israeli company Precise Bio, this technology can produce hundreds of corneas from a single donor, potentially reducing the long waiting times for corneal transplants in Israel.
In addition to implants, Ichilov prints detailed 3D models for surgical planning, such as liver tumor resections, enabling surgeons to operate with millimeter precision and preserve healthy tissue. The hospital performs about 150 implant surgeries annually and anticipates that within the next decade, they will be able to print real bones from patients’ own cells, eventually advancing to full organ printing. This progress could drastically shorten or eliminate organ transplant waiting lists.
