Trump Struggles With Iran Conflict as US Faces Regional Challenges and Domestic Pressure
The ongoing tensions in the Persian Gulf echo conflicts from decades ago, with Winston Churchill’s famous quote about Americans eventually doing the right thing after trying all other options resurfacing in the context of Donald Trump’s approach to Iran. Despite his grandiose style, Trump has so far only engaged symbolically in regional conflicts, including Israel’s recent operations, while mainly resorting to rhetoric that has failed to deter Iran.
Trump initially underestimated Iran, viewing it as a Third World country that could be quickly subdued, influenced by plans attributed to Benjamin Netanyahu and former Mossad chief Dedi Barnea for a swift regime change. However, Iran’s refusal to accept US proposals, including symbolic gestures like reopening the Strait of Hormuz for free navigation, has frustrated Trump, who faces unprecedented domestic criticism and a complex Middle Eastern reality that defies Western understanding.
Israel recognizes the West’s difficulty in grasping Middle Eastern dynamics, especially regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which remains unresolved despite Israel’s military successes against Hamas since October 7. The lack of a political horizon for ending the conflict and Israel’s international standing limit its ability to claim a decisive victory without severe consequences.
Trump’s attempts to restart negotiations with Iran have been met with mockery and defiance, with Iran escalating provocations both verbally and militarily. While the US has the capacity to inflict significant damage through airstrikes, a ground invasion would entail heavy American casualties and regional instability, complicating public support at home.
As Trump vacillates between threats and retreats, hoping for a dignified exit from the crisis, Iran’s persistent provocations undermine US global standing. In Israel, there is skepticism about the assumed US-Iran conflict serving Israeli interests, given the potential direct and indirect damages and the risk of Israel being sidelined in any future reconciliation process brokered by the US after such a war.
