Israeli Lawmakers Warn Overseas Voters May Lose Voting Rights Due to Interior Ministry Negligence

Israeli Interior Ministry negligence may cause Israelis returning from abroad to lose their voting rights in the upcoming elections, according to Knesset Member Gilad Kariv. The deadline to appeal removal from the voter registry is tomorrow, Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Kariv urged Israelis living overseas to urgently verify their registration status, criticizing the Interior Ministry for delaying the publication of clear instructions on how to check voter registration.

Kariv explained that the Interior Ministry, not the Central Elections Committee, is responsible for preparing the voter registry. Despite repeated requests from lawmakers, the ministry has failed to provide simple and effective tools for citizens to confirm their inclusion in the registry. He emphasized that while there is no evidence of malicious intent to remove voters, the situation reflects "deep negligence," exacerbated by the absence of a permanent Interior Minister for over a year.

Kariv estimated that about a million Israelis live abroad, with tens of thousands expected to return to vote. He advised these voters to use the next 24 hours to contact the Interior Ministry via SMS, email, or WhatsApp, as detailed on the ministry's website under the elections section. The warning highlights concerns over potential disenfranchisement of overseas voters in the 2026 elections due to administrative failures.
