Portland Trail Blazers' Ja Morant Trade Puts NBA Star Deni Avdija in Difficult Position

While the move was initially celebrated as a strong upgrade for Portland, analysts in the United States warn it could negatively impact Israeli player Deni Avdija's future with the team. Avdija, who had his best season yet and made his first All-Star appearance since being drafted ninth overall in 2020, now faces a more complicated contract situation due to Portland's increased financial commitments.

CBS Sports writer Sam Quinn highlighted that the Blazers' long-term salary obligations to Morant, who earns $42 million this season and $44 million in 2027/28, will make it difficult to extend Avdija's contract when it expires after the 2027/28 season. Avdija is currently in the third year of a four-year, $55 million deal considered very cost-effective for an All-Star-level player, but the team will need to offer him a significantly more expensive contract soon. Additionally, Donovan Klingen is also expected to become a free agent in 2028, further complicating Portland's salary cap situation.

The analysis suggests Portland has about two years to decide which players to build around for the future. Despite Avdija's recent strong performance, the Morant trade has complicated the team's decision-making. The Blazers will likely have to make tough choices, as retaining all three key players under the salary cap appears unlikely. Quinn concluded that while the trade made sense strategically, it may ultimately weaken the team and put Avdija in a less favorable position moving forward.
