Iran Cites Acoustic Security Fears for Silence on Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei's Whereabouts

Iranian officials in Tehran have refused to release any voice recordings of Mojtaba Khamenei, the new Supreme Leader, citing advanced technological risks that could reveal his exact location. According to reports from Iranian state media, including Al-Moshaheri, intelligence agencies fear that acoustic fingerprinting could expose the underground bunker where Khamenei is believed to be hiding. Acoustic analysis can identify unique sound characteristics of enclosed spaces, electrical grid frequencies, and background noises such as ventilation or generators, potentially pinpointing the recording’s time and place.

Experts can also analyze the speaker’s voice resonance to infer physiological details like breathing patterns, heart rate, and stress levels. While Tehran frames these precautions as stringent information security measures to protect Khamenei’s life, Western intelligence remains skeptical. They question whether anyone is actually recording messages for Khamenei, especially since his father-in-law recently stated that Mojtaba is currently isolated from all contacts and institutions.

The unusual absence of Mojtaba Khamenei from his father Ali Khamenei’s funeral has fueled widespread rumors and criticism inside and outside Iran. Senior politician Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel confirmed Mojtaba’s health but attributed his seclusion to political considerations. Meanwhile, a Saudi channel cited an Israeli security source describing deep internal divisions within Iran’s leadership, claiming Mojtaba is not even in Iran and that public messages attributed to him are authored by former Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi and Revolutionary Guards commanders who effectively run the country.

Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed Supreme Leader following the assassination of his father during Israel’s Operation Shagat Ha’ari. His rapid elevation occurred amid dramatic circumstances, including a secret online meeting of the Assembly of Experts after their Qom headquarters was bombed by Israel.
