Female Commanders Celebrate Opening Elite IDF Combat Units to Women in 2026 Draft

Mor Leidani and Gali Nishri, both female commanders in the Israel Defense Forces, have led a legal battle to integrate women into elite combat units such as Sayeret Matkal, Unit 669, and Yehalam. Their efforts, spanning over six years, involved multiple petitions to Israel's Supreme Court, resulting in the opening of these units to women for the 2026 draft. Although Mor and Gali themselves will not serve on the front lines, they take pride in the opportunities now available to young women undergoing military selection.

Mor, who struggled for seven years to secure her right to enlist, and Gali, who initially dreamed of joining Shayetet 13, describe the challenges they faced, including family skepticism and institutional resistance. Their legal campaign emphasized opening combat roles to women unless the nature of the mission inherently excludes them. They reject token pilot programs, insisting on equal standards and full integration.

The commanders highlight the significance of Unit 669's opening to women as a turning point, demonstrating the army's serious commitment to gender integration. However, the ongoing conflict since October 7 has complicated resource allocation for integration efforts. They also address tensions arising from religious soldiers uncomfortable with mixed-gender service, advocating for mutual respect and accommodation without excluding women from combat roles.

Mor and Gali emphasize that women's presence in combat units is no longer seen as unusual, with many young women now aspiring to serve in these elite roles.
