IDF Communications Officer Navigates Deadly Frontlines in Gaza and Lebanon Conflicts
Captain Y, the communications officer of Brigade 401, played a critical role in maintaining command and control during intense combat operations against Hamas in Gaza and later against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. On October 6, 2023, just a day before the death of Brigade Commander Colonel Ahsan Daksa, she coordinated communications from the front command post in Israel after a complex engagement involving Golani reconnaissance units. She managed the technological and tactical challenges of providing secure and reliable communications in densely built-up areas filled with tunnels, sniper threats, and explosive devices, making crucial decisions on deploying communication platforms to support advancing infantry and armored units.
Following Colonel Daksa's death from a roadside bomb in Gaza, Captain Y helped facilitate the transition to the new brigade commander, Colonel Meir Biderman, who took over amid ongoing combat operations. Under her leadership, Brigade 401 shifted focus in February 2026 to the northern front against Hezbollah, conducting raids under constant threat from anti-tank missiles, snipers, and drones, including fiber-optic tethered drones that complicated electronic countermeasures. She oversaw the deployment of advanced communication trucks and systems in challenging terrain such as the Wadi Ayun area, enabling command and control despite enemy attempts to disrupt networks.
Captain Y emphasized the vital role of her communications platoon, composed of highly trained infantry soldiers, in ensuring operational success and soldier safety. She described the mental and physical toll of repeatedly setting up and dismantling command posts under fire, including a night when a suicide drone targeted the brigade commander's location. Despite personal losses, including the deaths of Colonel Daksa and Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Shimon, she remains committed to her mission, reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of resilience in war.
At 28, divorced and without children, Captain Y has rapidly advanced through the ranks due to her expertise and leadership in battlefield communications. Her story highlights the indispensable yet often unseen role of communications officers in modern warfare, bridging the gap between command decisions and frontline fighters under extreme conditions.
