Israeli Football Clubs Advance in Europe, Boosting UEFA Ranking Prospects

Israeli football clubs have achieved a significant milestone by advancing to the third qualifying round in their respective European competitions for the first time since the 2017/18 season. Four Israeli teams, Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the Champions League, Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League, and Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Conference League, secured progression, marking a successful week for Israeli football.

This advancement not only represents a sporting achievement but also contributes positively to Israel's UEFA coefficient ranking. The recent matches added 0.375 points, raising Israel's five-year total to 22.125 points and placing the country 25th in the UEFA rankings. So far this season, Israeli clubs have earned 1.375 points, nearly half of last season's total of 2.875 points, with more opportunities to gain points as all four teams continue in their tournaments.

Comparatively, the four countries ranked above Israel, Romania, Ukraine, Croatia, and Slovenia, each lost at least one representative, with Slovenia losing three. Croatia, currently 23rd with 23.781 points, is the next target for Israel to surpass. Maintaining or improving this ranking is crucial because it determines the number of Israeli clubs allowed in higher-tier European competitions and the stage at which they enter. For example, the 15th position, currently held by Cyprus, grants two teams entry into the Champions League qualifiers, starting from later rounds.

The progress of Israeli clubs this season enhances the country's chances of climbing the UEFA rankings, potentially securing more favorable placements and additional representatives in future European tournaments.
