Beitar Jerusalem Advances in Conference League Despite Goalkeeper Miguel Silva's Mixed Performance

Beitar Jerusalem secured their place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over AEK Larnaca on Thursday, following a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes. The club celebrated the advancement but expressed mixed feelings about goalkeeper Miguel Silva, who saved two penalties and became the hero of the shootout but made several critical errors during the match that nearly cost the team elimination. A Beitar source commented, "It's nice that he saved two penalties and thanks to him we won and advanced, but it will be very difficult to win a championship, which is the club's clear goal, with such an unstable goalkeeper. In this game alone, he made three mistakes that could have ended in certain goals, one of which already cost us dearly."

Around 3,000 Beitar fans in Ploiești, Romania, cheered Silva before the shootout, and after he saved the second penalty, he celebrated passionately on the pitch with coach Almog Cohen embracing him. However, the joy did not erase the fact that Silva's mistakes complicated Beitar's path to victory. While Beitar dominated the first leg in Cyprus with a clean sheet, their performance in the return leg was weaker, falling behind three times before ultimately prevailing in penalties.

Midfielder Omer Atzili was another key player, drawing a penalty, scoring it, and later netting a stunning goal in the 87th minute that seemed to secure the win. Cohen substituted him afterward, confident of qualification. Yet Silva's subsequent error, deflecting the ball directly to Beitz who scored to force extra time, kept the tension alive. Atzili’s goal marked his 23rd in European competitions for Israeli clubs, excluding two goals scored for Omonia Nicosia.

Beitar was encouraged by the performances of Nana Antwi and Daniel Vorko, the latter proving to be one of the summer's best signings. Conversely, key players like Shon Weissman struggled; Weissman was substituted early, Jachnavousko Kalo left at halftime, and substitute Yarden Shua missed a crucial chance in the 111th minute. Boris also faced criticism after a handball in the box led to a penalty for Larnaca.

Looking ahead, Beitar Jerusalem will face Austria Vienna in the next round. Austria Vienna finished fourth in the Austrian league and advanced after a commanding 5-1 aggregate win over Latvian club Liepāja.
