Religious Women Debate Gender Segregation in Israeli Academia Amid Rising Tensions

The latest episode of the podcast "These Religious Women" featured a heated discussion about a legislative proposal by Knesset member Limor Son Har-Melech. The bill seeks to extend gender segregation in academic courses beyond undergraduate studies to include graduate and doctoral programs. This proposal has sparked intense debate within the religious community.

Panelists such as Ayelet Slissel and attorney Tzofenat Nordman highlighted the demand among many Haredi women for separate academic frameworks, which they say would enable more women to pursue higher education. Conversely, voices like "Pini," representing Haredi women, expressed concern that such segregation could lead to increased rabbinical control over curricula and entrench gender separation for decades.

Ortall Barzilai shared a personal story illustrating the exclusion faced by religious women in existing institutions. About ten years ago, she was rejected from Haredi academic programs for being "national-religious" and was advised by the Council for Higher Education to study in secular institutions. Barzilai emphasized that Son Har-Melech’s bill addresses the needs of national-religious women seeking alternative academic options.

Host Hadar Ben Hamo described a pervasive fear within the general society toward religious identity, noting that under the guise of liberalism, religious women are often pushed out of cultural and influential spaces. She recounted experiencing silent boycotts and online hostility due to her religious observance and head covering.

Despite these challenges, the panelists acknowledged gradual positive changes, such as more respectful media coverage of religious issues and events in Judea and Samaria. Barzilai concluded by supporting affirmative action policies for religious women, stating that without such measures, their inclusion in academia would remain unlikely.
