UEFA Threatens to Boycott 2030 World Cup Over FIFA Commercialization Plan

UEFA and its 55 member associations, including Israel, have unanimously threatened to boycott the 2030 FIFA World Cup in protest against FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plan to privatize and sell shares in the tournament's commercial rights. The decision was made during an emergency virtual meeting called by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin amid one of the most severe crises in global football history.

Infantino's proposal involves raising approximately $20 billion by selling shares in a new commercial entity called FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would control broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing, and other commercial activities related to the World Cup. UEFA strongly opposes this move, stating that the World Cup is a fundamental sporting asset that cannot be treated as an investment product.

UEFA's official statement declared that its members will not participate in FIFA competitions if the plan proceeds, including the men's and women's World Cups, youth tournaments, and the Club World Cup. However, UEFA's own competitions such as the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, and the European Championship will remain unaffected.

Infantino has set a deadline of September 19 for associations to approve the plan. Documents indicate that if approved, associations could receive an initial total of $10 billion, with up to $40 million per association. If rejected, the total distributed funds would drop to about $2.7 billion. This standoff highlights a deep rift between FIFA and UEFA over the future control and commercialization of football's premier event.
