Israeli Man Diagnosed With Rare Bone Cancer After Knee Pain Leads to Urgent Treatment

Oren Weiss, a 34-year-old DevOps engineer from Moshav Burgata, discovered he had a rare and aggressive bone cancer called osteosarcoma after experiencing severe knee pain during a trip to Europe in June 2023. Initially attributing the pain to an old military injury and a previous knee surgery, Weiss sought medical evaluation upon returning to Israel. Persistent pain led to X-rays and an MRI, which revealed a malignant tumor in his femur. He was urgently referred to Dr. Israel Weiss at Beilinson Hospital, where the diagnosis was confirmed.

Oren underwent an intensive treatment regimen including six cycles of chemotherapy, biological therapy, and a complex surgery to remove the tumor and reconstruct his leg with a custom oncological prosthesis. Despite the challenges, he completed additional chemotherapy and intensive physical rehabilitation, training alongside soldiers injured in combat. Throughout his illness, Weiss maintained his job at Unity, which helped preserve his mental well-being.

Before treatment, Weiss preserved his fertility and later, with his wife Yarden, pursued IVF. After a heartbreaking stillbirth at 21 weeks, the couple successfully welcomed their son Omer. Weiss now copes with chronic pain and disability but remains active and optimistic. He emphasizes the importance of hope, family support, and awareness of persistent pain symptoms that should prompt medical evaluation.

Doctors Israel Weiss and Idith Peretz highlighted the need for vigilance regarding sarcomas, especially in young adults, urging people not to dismiss persistent pain as mere sports injuries. They listed warning signs such as unrelenting pain without trauma, pain at rest or waking from sleep, swelling or redness, and systemic symptoms like appetite loss as reasons to seek prompt medical attention.
